The Upper Holloway project, delivered by Hochtief with temporary works design by Andun, is a typical example of the value added by Moreland conducting Cat iii checks.
The project comprised the replacement of a bridge supporting the A1, with the associated building of a dedicated services bridge. The two bridges are over the railway lines at Upper Holloway station. The Clients were TfL and Network Rail. The Contractor was Hochtief, who appointed Andun to design the necessary temporary works.
Moreland Project Role
Moreland were contracted to perform the necessary Cat iii checks on all designs; due to the rail context of the project, a Cat iii check was required on all temporary works designs. These ranged from site hoardings through crane positions and excavation support to the demolition of the main bridge itself.
For the main bridge demolition, Moreland carried out independent Cat iii checks on the crash deck to be installed for the works, the abutment walls’ stability both in short-term and long-term conditions and their propping during demolition. This demolition, which was the final piece of the jigsaw before reconstruction, was carried out at Christmas 2016. Thanks to the preparatory work of Andun and Moreland to support Hochtief, all went according to plan, and the new bridge has now been installed.
Moreland was an integral part of the success of this project through:
- Having the resources to respond quickly and achieve very tight deadlines
- Having experienced checkers able to grasp the substance of the design immediately
- Maintaining good communications with designers to ensure any issues were raised and solved in a timely fashion
- Having the necessary independence to provide certainty that all aspects of the design has been considered
Moreland is proud to be associated with this successful project.
